Learning vocabulary is one of the hardest parts of 11 plus preparation. With there being no set wordlist, it can feel like an endless, tedious task. Many children struggle to remember meanings and have them stick. It can feel very arduous just asking them over and over again what a word means and making no clear progress.

That’s why I researched the best ways for children to learn vocabulary and created my vocabulary course based on this. It ensures that:

• Words are introduced to children in a fun, memorable way.
• They learn them at the optimum pace.
• They practise them in meaningful ways with 11+ style questions.
• They do not forget the words they have previously learnt.

This course is designed to be done over a year, but can be done quicker for revision purposes.

It has 46 sets of 12 flashcards and a worksheet to practise each set with 11+ style vocabulary questions.

LEARN

Every single flashcard includes a memorable picture, along with a relevant sentence, definition and synonyms and antonyms where applicable. The pictures help the children make mental links between the word, the sentence and the meaning.

This is based on recent research showing that using images both helps children to learn vocabulary more effectively and increases their motivation to do so. (Dahki, 2018), (Khafidhoh, 2019), (Bates & Son, 2020)

PRACTISE

I have included a list of 16 fun games and activities to help children practise the word meanings, synonyms and antonyms. This has been inspired by research studies finding that we learn vocabulary more effectively through word games. (Akdogan, 2017), (Oman & Wins, 2021) I have seen with my own pupils that they have enjoyed the games and it’s helped them to learn the words.

Once they have had a go at learning the words with games and activities, each set of flashcards also has a worksheet filled with 11+ style questions to practise the words in a more exam-related way.

REVISE

To make sure that children do not forget words they have previously learnt, the vocabulary lists are carefully designed to build on each other to help children make links to their previous learning. 

Based on research into the optimum length of time between revisiting information (Cepada et al., 2008), every worksheet includes revision exercises with words from the previous week and previous month. This has led to very high word retention for all pupils who have completed the course.
